Ladybug Hunt

Ladybug Hunt: a photo of the cut-out frog and ladybugs sitting on real piano keys with two dice, next to the game sheet with its tiles, dice key, and rule cards. Click to download the free PDF

Ladybug Hunt takes repeat, step, and skip onto a real piano: cut out Frog and the ladybugs, roll a die, and go catch some bugs!

Sit the ladybugs on white keys all over the piano and put Frog near the middle. Roll a die to find out how Frog jumps: 1 is a repeat, 2 a step up, 3 a skip up, 4 a step down, 5 a skip down, and 6 means roll again. Say the jump out loud, play both keys so you hear it, and hop Frog over. Land on a ladybug and it’s caught. How many can Frog catch in eight rolls?

This is the second freebie of the day. It started as an extra page for Frog’s First Key Jumps, then turned into its own game. The worksheets teach the three jumps on paper, and Ladybug Hunt puts them under a student’s fingers, so the two go together well.

The cut-outs are made to fit on your piano keys. Print at 100% (no scaling) on card stock so they stay key-sized. The two rule cards cut out too, with the dice key on the how-to-play card, so the whole game fits in an envelope.

More ways to play 🎲

  • No dice: the student picks a ladybug, names the jump to reach it, and plays it.
  • Ears first: the teacher plays Frog’s key and one more. The student names the jump and moves Frog.
  • Two players: each takes a frog and rolls in turn. Most ladybugs wins.
  • Set up a box from the Key Jumps worksheets on the real piano, then play it.
  • Bigger jumps: each roll is its own interval, up or down. 1 is a unison, 2 a 2nd, 3 a 3rd, and so on up to a 6th.

From the keys to the staff 🐸

In Interval Jump, Frog crosses the river by jumping from log to log on the staff, and every jump is one of the same three questions: repeat, step, or skip. Ladybug Hunt is the same game with a real piano for a river.

Interval Jump is free to download, and repeats, steps, and skips are included in the free version!

Interval Jump: the frog waits on a log over the staff with a fly on a lily pad ahead, and the repeat, step, and skip buttons along the bottom.
The same three jumps in Interval Jump: repeat, step, or skip.
