Flip a card. Find every one of that key on the piano. Beat your time.

Find Every Key is a fast, no-prep game for the piano bench. Shuffle the deck, flip the top card, and the student hunts down every key with that name from the bottom of the keyboard to the top. It turns key naming from a worksheet skill into something they do with their hands on the real instrument, and once you add a timer, they will ask to play it again.

How to play

  1. Shuffle the cards and set the deck face down on the music stand.
  2. Flip the top card. Find every one of that key on the piano: play them all, from the lowest to the highest.
  3. Too easy? Time it. Write the best time on the Best Times board, then try to beat it next lesson.

The Group of 2 and Group of 3 cards mean find every group of black keys of that size, a good warm-up before the letters, since the black-key groups are how a beginner finds the white keys in the first place. Middle C, Lowest Key, and Highest Key have just one right answer, so they are all about speed. Your Choice! lets the player pick any key to hunt.

Deal only the naturals to a first-year student. Add the sharps and flats once those names are secure. The board has a row for each.

Printing and cutting

Print double-sided, flipped on the long edge. Each page of card backs is followed by its page of card fronts, so a duplex print lines them up.

Print the card pages on card stock and cut out the 27 cards. Print the How to Play sheet and the Best Times board on one sheet, back to back, and laminate it. The board is made for a dry-erase marker.

Find Every is built into Bees Keys Pro, and it runs on the real piano too. Put the iPad on the music desk, and the app listens for each key through the microphone, or over MIDI: the student plays, and Bees Keys checks every answer, times the round, and keeps the best time for every key on a board just like the printed one.
